"The Great Gatsby" (2012) - First Trailer

After seeing those gorgeous first stills for "The Great Gatsby" with Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire, I was very impressed. But how everything looks in the trailer is much more that I've expected from this adaptation. It looks like a hell of a show, but I think it's too much. I never imagined that it could be as huge, shiny and entertaining, while I was reading the book.

And, of course, I'm going to read again the great novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald before I watch the film to know, if Baz Luhrmann made a good adaptation or not. Either way, his version of "The Great Gatsby" has to be fabulous.

The film release is set up for the end of this December.

"Django Unchained" (2012) - Two Trailers

I must confess that I'm a huge Quentin Tarantino's fan, but I watched the first trailer for his new spaghetti western "Django Unchained" just a few days ago. If you are interested why, I say I needed to prepare myself for it. I wasn't afraid of it might disappoint me, because Tarantino hasn't made any film yet, which I don't like. I just wanted to prolong this waiting of the first trailer. And while I waited, they released another one! So here we go.


You know that with such great cast "Django Unchained" has no other option as to be something like a new masterpiece. My two all-time favourite actors Christoph Waltz and Leonardo DiCaprio were perfect for those parts.

So far the scene, where Dr. King Schultz meets Django, is one of my favourites! And I can't wait to see more of Samuel L. Jackson, because those few seconds weren't enough!


I heard that Will Smith had a chance to play the main character, but he turned down this part, because of "Men in Black 3". Shame, this film could have been more epic with him. But Jamie Foxx is a good choice for this part instead.

"The Perks of Being A Wallflower" (2012) - Trailer

FINALLY! I was waiting for this trailer for so long, and it was presented the other evening at the MTV Movie Awards 2012. What I think about it? It was exactly I wanted to see. It's witty, smart, careless and meaningful. Emma Watson, Logan Lerman and Ezra Miller were the perfect choice to play the main characters. But I'm not very surprised, considering that director Steven Chbosky is the writer of the book of the same name.


The film will be out in cinemas this September. If you want to know more about "The Perks of Being A Wallflower", read this article.

"Les Miserables" (2012) - First teaser and stills

As I wrote a few months ago, "Les Miserables" is one of my most anticipated films of this year. I enjoyed very much the previous film by Tom Hooper, so I hope this one will be also great. Finally its first promo video was released. If you don't know it already, this 19th-century drama has a great cast, which includes Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne, Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen (he just has to play more serious characters). And you can hear Hathaway's singing a beautiful, but sad song during the time they present many important characters.

By the way, I'm going to read a book of the same name written by French novelist Victor Hugo first. I have plenty of time till December, when the premiere of "Les Miserables" is rumoured to happen.

Festival de Cannes 2012 - Part 3

This post is dedicated to the interesting films, which were premiered at the few last days of the 65th Cannes Film Festival.

Director Lee Daniels, who is famous thanks to his "Precious", gathered a nice crew to create "The Paperboy", which was presented on 24th May. Zac Efron, Nicole Kidman, Matthew McConaughey, John Cusack came to support it, telling how unusual, daring, nasty etc. etc. this film is. Efron wears only his underpants almost the whole film, Kidman was ready to experiment, Cusack plays a disgusting character. Critics say that the main heroine is incredible there. So don't be tricked by the innocent description of this film.



We know that Michael Haneke's "Amour" was the film that forced people to tear a little (and a lot), but British dark comedy "Sightseers" became the one that made them laugh. It's not the first film directed by Ben Wheatley, but the few previous ones didn't made him famous. Now he along with Edgar Wright tells a story about a couple, which takes around the world trip. However some events turn this adventure into a remarkable one. The main parts are played by the screenwriters, Alice Lowe and Steve Oram.

While her mother presents her freakish debut work, Kristen Stewart along with a great team, which includes Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Mortensen, Sam Riley and director Walter Salles came to Cannes with an adventurous film, "On the Road". This story is dedicated to the Beat Generation, so at least its soundtrack has to be good.

Criminal drama "Mud" by Jeff Nichols has already been named 'the biggest surprise' and 'one of the best In Competition'. It is named after the main character, but its title also describes what he has to overpass on his way to freedom and the girl he loves. This drama is about two teenagers, who are helping a fugitive. It sounds a bit creepy, but it seems like Matthew McConaughey was the right choice for this part. And Reese Witherspoon is also in there, probably she is that girl.



Also "Cosmopolis" was shown In Competition. It is second year in a row, when David Cronenberg presents his new work at the Cannes Film Festival. As we know Cronenberg, his films have to be a bit crazy. Robert Pattinson played the main part. He decisively, like his long-term co-star Stewart, needs to shake off his gloving character, and this film might help him. All his billionaire Eric Packer wants is to get a new haircut, but there are some serious traffic problems on the way, because the President came to the city. So he is stuck in his limo, where he meets different people.



And there is sad news about one of the actors, who is rumoured to be a serious candidate for best actor prize this year. Aniello Arena,  who played the main character in Matteo Garrone's "Reality", is sentenced to spend the rest of his life in a Tuscan jail for murder.

Festival de Cannes 2012 - Part 2

I continue following the most interesting premieres and other events of this year's Cannes Film Festival. This post will tell you what happened on 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th days in a beautiful French city, where the weather played some evil tricks, causing downpours and even roof collapses.

One of the surprises of those days was a film about a section of the Los Angeles County Jail reserved for homosexuals, AIDS patients and transsexuals. This drama is called "K-11", and is directed by Jules Mann-Stewart, Kristen Stewart's mother. It sounds like a hard story, which definitely shouldn't be mistaken with a 1990s comedy "K-911", starring James Belushi.

Brad Pitt arrived to present his latest thriller "Killing Them Softly". I was hoping to see him and Angelina Jolie on the red carpet, but it wasn't meant to be. He was there along director Andrew Dominik, who has almost the same hairstyle and beard as Pitt, and it makes them look like brothers. By the way, this film has been already named "this year's Drive", which makes me even more excited to see it!

Another film I'm anxious to see is "Lawless". It was presented by the whole crew, including Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf and Jason Clarke, who play three brothers with a dangerous bootlegging business. They say Hardy was in a great mood, joking and telling about funny behind-the-scenes moments. Director John Hillcoat told the journalists that this films was inspired partly by Sergio Leone's westerns.



23-years-old director Xavier Dolan traditionally presented his third film at the Cannes Film Festival. His "Laurence Anyways" is 3-hours long love story between a man and a woman, which becomes even more complicated after the first one decides to change his sex. His previous works, "J'ai tué ma mère" and "Les amours imaginaires", were highly appreciated at this Festival. This time there was a standing ovation for 5 minutes after its premiere.



Michael Haneke has already got 7 prizes from Cannes, ans his new drama "Amour" may bring him another one. It turns out to be very touching, many journalists were in tears after they watched it. This film is about love of two old people. The wife is dying and husband tries to comfort her, while their daughter insists to put her mother into the nursing home. It has to be also heartbreaking, so all critics loved it so far!

Festival de Cannes 2012 - Part 1

The previous year I wrote about every day of the Cannes Film Festival, telling you what interesting press conferences, photocalls, premieres, awkward and great moments took place. This year I have no time to process such amount of information, so there will be just a few entries dedicated to the events, which are happening in Cannes right now. This entry is about those first three days of this international film event, which have already passed.

The Presidents of three Juries (In Competition, Un Certain Regard, Cinéfoundation and short films) are Nanni Moretti, Tim Roth and Jean-Pierre Dardenne, so they and their mates are watching all films very attentively, trying not to miss the really good ones to praise them fairly.

"Moonrise Kingdom" was the opening film this time, and unexpectedly for me, almost all critics loved it! Bruce Willis, Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Tilda Swinton along with Wes Anderson came to support their new adventurous comedy about some weird adults, who try to find two twelve-year-old runaways in love.

Of course, such huge festival couldn't be missed by one of the most eccentric actors nowadays. Sacha Baron Cohen arrived with his female bodyguards to present his new dark comedy "The Dictator", directed by Larry Charles. The promo campaign of this film is incredibly intrusive, you must remember how he has spilled ashes over Ryan Seacrest on the Academy Awards red carpet, so I'm very glad that it is finally over, because "The Dictator" is already out in cinemas.



Among other films, which were presented out of competition, are two DreamWorks' animations "Rise of the Guardians" and "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted". Isla Fisher jokes that the first one is like "The Animated Avengers", because it's a story about a team of the mythical fairy-tale characters, who have to save the world. Probably, it is more like "The Avengers for little kids". And the third film of the famous franchise is rumoured to be the last one, but who knows, if it will earn enough money.

French filmmaker Jacques Audiard, who won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in 2009, returns with his new shocking drama called "De rouille et d'os" ("Rust and Bone"). The critics like it so far. Marion Cotillard and Matthias Schoenaerts, who played the main parts, also came to support their film. It is about two people in love, but one of them is unemployed and the other is a killer whale trainer, who has lost both her legs. There must be passion, hate, blind love and many tragic circumstances.

Also "Reality" by Matteo Garrone was shown in Competition, a story about one happy family man, whose life changes rapidly after he has this obsessive idea to become a reality star and to prove everyone that he is very special.




Michel Gondry's "The We and the I" was the first film presented in Directors' Fortnight selection. 35 kinds are traveling in a bus during the different centuries, so none of them is going to be the same after this adventure. It was followed by Pablo Larrain's historical drama "No", starring Gael García Bernal. He portrays a PR manager, who has to persuade people to begin a revolt against Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet.

One of the biggest announcements so far was that Jackie Chan is done being an action film star. He is one of my all time favourite actors, and now "Chinese Zodiac" is going to be his last film as a leading hero. Though I understand how tired he can be after decades of being hurt while filming, but Jackie Chan did incredible things on the set, which no other actor can do. Now he wants to be a dramatic actor, which is also very good, because he has a real talent and no matter which film genre he chooses, he will succeeded.

"Dark Shadows" (2012) - Personal quiz

It is left a few days till the premiere of Tim Burton's comic-and-tragic vampire love story, "Dark Shadows". Tired of waiting and re-watching trailers, I took a little character quiz, which showed that I'm more like the main character, Barnabas Collins:

Top-5 films of Cannes Film Festival 2012

The line-up for the 65th annual Cannes Film Festival was announced a few weeks ago, but I hadn't much time to check it and pick just 5 films, which I'd definitely like to watch, until now.

"Moonrise Kingdom" by Wes Anderson

"I will meet you in the meadow."

It is the opening film of the festival, and if you remember the one, which started it the previous year, Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris", you know it has to be something special. The cast is very strong, it includes Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand and Tilda Swinton. "Moonrise Kingdom" set in the 1960s and tells a love story of two young people, who decide to run away. So their parents with help of a local sheriff start searching for them. Its trailer is surreal and weird, that is why I like it.

"Lawless" by John Hillcoat

"I'm the one who's going to make your life real difficult from now on if you don't toe the line country boy."

A gangster drama, based on a true story. Aren't you already interested in it? Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy and Jason Clarke play three brothers, who are running a very risky business, bootlegging. But new political era makes it even harder and definitely more dangerous. Also there are Gary Oldman, Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska and Guy Pearce, who won't let this film to be boring. The trailer atmosphere is very tense, especially I like the music, which gives me goose bumps. And don't confuse it with Terrence Malick's "Lawless" with Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara and Christian Bale, which will be out in 2013.

"Hemingway and Gellhorn" by Philip Kaufman

"Someone has to go, someone has to write about this."

If you are a bit familiar with Ernest Hemingway's works and life, you know that it could be a great biopic. Martha Gellhorn was his wife and a talented journalist, who became famous thanks to her war reports. The main parts are played by Clive Owen and Nicole Kidman, who look very persuasive in the only trailer, which was released so far. War, passion, love, talent - this film must be very impressive.

"The Paperboy" by Lee Daniels

Another film with Nicole Kidman. But this time she is playing a seductive woman, due to the first stills. Zac Efron and Matthew McConaughey are portraying the brothers; the younger of them helps the elder and his companion to discover who murdered the local sheriff a few years ago. While the brothers have other problems to manage, the third one fabricates some evidence to write the story without them. And now the justice must triumph or the wrong man will be executed.

"Killing Them Softly" by Andrew Dominik

Brad Pitt portrays Jackie Cogan, an enforcer, who has to investigate the heist of a poker game with the high stakes. This film is based on a novel by George V. Higgins, and is directed by a man, whose favourite and very successful film genre is crime. We'll see if this story could be this year's "Drive".

The Women of "Bel Ami" (2012)

I'm very into period dramas, so I just couldn't miss "Bel Ami", a new adaptation of Guy de Maupassant's novel of the same name. Yes, it stars Robert Pattinson, but I have no prejudice towards him. This story is about a young man, who is tired of being poor and uses his charm to seduce rich women. I enjoyed the film, though I haven't read the book, so I can't tell if it is a good or bad adaptation. The most of all I liked its atmosphere, which was created thanks to beautiful music, gorgeous costumes and picturesque locations.

The main character, Georges Duroy, doesn't like to waste his precious time, so during 1 hour 30 min he manages to sleep with 4 women, almost sleep with a young innocent girl, and who knows how many of his affairs were left outside this story. All female characters impressed me, and every actress did a great job.

Rachel (Natalia Tena)

She is a prostitute, the first and the poorest woman, with whom Duroy has slept in this film. Also it was the most sinful sex and the most naked scene in the whole film.

Clotilde de Marelle (Christina Ricci)

She is my favourite female character here, because there is something honest and pure about her, though she cheated on her husband with the main character. And I think Clotilde is the only woman he cared about, and if he married her, he'd stop playing his games.

Madeleine Forestier (Uma Thurman)

Beautiful and smart woman isn't the one, who is easy to fool. But she also lets him in, after her husband died. It is a big question why she did it, because she didn't really need him as a friend nor lover. She was a complete person without his greedy ambitions.

Virginie Walters (Kristin Scott Thomas)

A lady, who was married for many years and has never cheated on her husband, falls in love with Duroy, because he was the only man, who said nice words to her. But then her love turned into dangerous obsession, she became crazy, and I think she didn't survive his new marriage.

Suzanne Rousset (Holliday Grainger)

The last victim of Duroy was naive Suzanne. She was very young, inexperienced and rich, so he just couldn't stop using her. I wonder how fast she figured out that he doesn't care about her at all.

"Django Unchained" (2012) - First pictures!

Finally, the creators of "Django Unchained", Quentin Tarantino's spaghetti western, began to release some promo stuff. Now we got the first look at Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz and Jamie Foxx, who look very great in those costumes. May I be the one to start Oscar rumours right now? Because there is a big chance that the work of its costume department will be appreciated.

P.S. And I remind you that no matter how bad-ass Waltz is looking on this picture, his Dr. King Schultz is going to be a good guy. However you must beware of DiCaprio's Calvin Candie, he must be a ruthless sadist.

"Hitchcock" (2013) - First look at Anthony Hopkins

The very first promo image for the new biopic was released. Before I saw this picture, I've never thought that there is some resemblance between Anthony Hopkins and Alfred Hitchcock. But is it that he really gained some weight or this film has a talented make-up artist, Hopkins became unrecognisable - I see only Hitchcock there.

This film is called simply "Hitchcock" and will be in cinemas in 2013. It is going to be a love story about Alfred Hitchcock and Alma Reville, his wife, who is played by Helen Mirren, while he was filming his famous "Psycho". And the rumour says that we will see Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Biel and Toni Collette among them. The director is Sacha Gervas, who is one of the screenwriters of Spielberg's "The Terminal". Also the biopic is based on a book by Stephen Rebello.

Both leading actors are the Academy Award winners, so "Hitchcock" has a good chance to become one of the critics favourite. I doubt that such cast can ruin this interesting story.

"Django Unchained" (2012) - Teaser poster and some thoughts

This film is on my top waiting list since the first time I've heard about 'new Tarantino's project'. Quentin Tarantino got style, and this teaser poster for his spaghetti western "Django Unchained" proves it again. But there is a huge 'but' about it. This 'totally new' promo material from The Weinstein Company looks like an old poster, made by a fan and released many months ago. I just hope that his work was appreciated, not copied or stolen. Or maybe it is still a fan-art, but promoted by The Weinstein Company. I'm confused and now I'm waiting to see something really different, when another poster will be released.

"Django Unchained" is about the times of slavery, which is very good at broking human lives. If you have seen "Inglourious Basterds", you know that the story won't be about historical truth.

The plot says: 'With the help of his mentor, a slave-turned-bounty hunter sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal Mississippi plantation owner.'

You must have heard that Joseph Gordon-Levitt supposed to play a part there, but we won't see him in this film. However, we still have a great crew: Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Don Johnson. Oh, they will make it a masterpiece. By the way, Christoph Waltz is now playing a good character, so don't expect to see Hans Landa.

"To Rome With Love" (2012) - First trailer

"You will never understand women!"
"That's been proven."

Woody Allen continues to travel all around Europe, so his new film is set in Rome. Its trailer shows that it is going to be a wonderful, ironic romantic comedy. Mr. Allen also plays one of the main characters, which is great, because I don't remember him being on the screen since weird "Scoop" (2006).

This film has a very good and various cast: Penélope Cruz as passionate Anna, Alec Baldwin as self-confident John, Roberto Benigni as new TV star Leopoldo, Ellen Page as honest Monica and Jesse Eisenberg as confused Jack.

"THE AVENGERS" (2012) - 'Head Count' TV Spot

New short promo video for "The Avengers" has arrived. I'm very glad that they added more of that great conversation, where Loki and Tony Stark try to impress one another with their power and team strength. Tom Hiddleston and Robert Downey Jr. look like a perfect villain/hero duo. And I totally agree with the latter, the Avengers are greater than any army, so I hope they will win this war.

On May 4th, we're finally going to watch this.

Yes, the film is not rated yet, but Tony Stark knows that it will be eventually, so he just can't hide his self-confident smile.

"Dark Shadows" (2012) - TV Spot №3

"Fifteen and no husband? You must put those birthing hips to good use at once."

New 1-minute promo for Tim Burton's "Dark Shadows" is even more hilarious than the trailer. Johnny Depp did a great job this time, and I have no doubts that the film will prove it soon. If you still don't know what about this story is, it takes place in 1972, when a vampire wakes up from his long sleep. He returns to his manor and meets new people, who aren't very excited about such a creepy cohabitant. His name is Barnabas Collins, and he wants to return the days of glory for his family.

There is more of Michelle Pfeiffer this time. Her Elizabeth Collins Stoddard will have some problems with her eccentric ancestor, but at least she won't be bored with him.

"IRON MAN 2" - Soundtrack

"Iron Man 2" is my most favourite film with one of the Avengers. They say that director Jon Favreau is a big fan of AC/DC, so it's no wonder that the soundtrack consists totally just from the songs of this  legendary rock band. They match perfectly Tony Stark's character.
